The poet Herman Gorter (1864-1927) is still very much admired in Flanders and the Netherlands but it has to be admitted that apart from Gorter’s best-known epic poem, Mei (May, 1889), and his Verzen collection (translated by Paul Vincent in 2015 as Poems of 1890), much of his sizeable oeuvre (which also consists of socialist poems, essays, articles, booklets and letters) still goes unremarked.
