2012 will see the centenary of Marten Toonder, the greatest of Dutch cartoonists, whose literary approach places him more fittingly alongside masters such as Lewis Caroll than Walt Disney, but who nonetheless owed a lot to the latter indirectly. What makes his work so unique, is that he not only provides a gentle criticism of society, but that in so doing he created animals like people.
