The great strenght of Mensje van Keulen's short stories is the penetrating power of the tragedy and horror, often combined. She has a penchant for homely gothic in the style of Dahl's Tales of the Unexpected. Another line is that of slice of life literature, in which silent despair and irrational internalised grief lie in wait, as in the prose of Raymond Carver. With an anthology of two stories.
