The Praise of Folly occupies a very modest position within Erasmus' oeuvre. Nowadays he is judged on the basis of this book. The impression may have arisen that it was employed only as a weapon in the fight against everything that was wrong in the Church, state and society. But for most readers the book was first and foremost a source of relaxation and pleasure.
