In the Netherlands the birth of a child is inseparable from buttered rusk with muisjes. This piece tells the story of these coloured aniseed comfits and then goes on to describe the living-room culture prevailing in the Netherlands. Natural childbirth is much in favour again, and Dutch mothers are more likely than their sisters elsewhere in the West to give birth at home.
