Kristien Spooren: Gingerbread

Kristien Spooren

This week's Friday Verses are written by Kristien Spooren. We translated Peperkoek (Gingerbread). The poem was first published in Dutch in Het Liegend Konijn, a magazine for contemporary Dutch-language poetry.

The young, promising Kristien Spooren (b. 1994, Mechelen) is a writer, performance poet and medical anthropologist. She has published in such literary magazines as Deus Ex Machina and Het Liegend Konijn, made the top 100 in the Turing Poetry Competition and has won several prizes for performance and text. In her work Kristien strives for abiding images to translate raw reality. The texts contain the kind of emotion that makes one gasp for breath.

Gingerbread

The family’s in a bad way,
said the paper I was reading before I got into the shower.
I turn the knobs for hot and cold water.
It’s hard to find the right temperature.

My sister gave me macadamia milk.
I squeeze the last drop out of the bottle
and watch as the soap slips through my hands.
I remember the smell of family
and cry louder than the shower.

The soap foams like sheepskins
Once I held a dead lamb in my arms,
rejected by its mother.
Just before it died, it gave a last shiver.
As if it were saying in Morse code:
Some things don’t work
And you can’t learn from them.

I have learned how to use a towel.
When I rub the shower off me,
I’m a snake shedding its skin.

My mother did not like shedding skin,
renewing, changing.
She was partly made possible by gingerbread.
She always wanted slices without crystallised sugar,
Which I was allowed to pick off.
I always made Lipton tea for her,
with sugar and two level teaspoonfuls of lemon.

When spring came, we worked in the garden.
Each spring I asked her something about the phloxes
because she was fond of saying
that they were Granny’s favourite flowers.
We dug up weeds too.
As if they were fathers.
Checked to see if I were in bloom yet
and how later I only grew downwards.

With the towel I rub my skin dry.
I have no clothes on.
If you sit on the ground,
draw up your knees,
wrap your arms round your legs,
and breathe in deeply,
it’s as if you’re being cuddled.

I’m no good at breaking.

Peperkoek
