The poet and prose writer J. Slauerhoff is one of the most important authors in Dutch literature. Critical views on his work have nevertheless always been mixed. This article paints a portrait of this 'Frisian Rimbaud', a late romantic whose best work is a convincing portrayal of the oppressive paradoxes which determine his character (with two poems and a story in translation).
