After his relatively late debut, the Flemish writer, translator and critic Paul Claes (1943-) let loose a flood of articles and more than fifty books and booklets. Van der Paardt regards him as a true literary wizard, who feels at home in all genres. This article is a search for a core of unity in the midst of such diversity, namely writing as a form of commentary on the literary tradition
