Life on board with the VOC for today's armchair traveller: between 1595 – when four ships from Amsterdam sailed around the Cape of Good Hope to Asia – and 1794 – when the last flotilla of ships under the flag of the Dutch East India Company, sailed to the East Indies – some 4700 vessels set course for the Orient from the Netherlands.
