The cultural review ‘De Gids' commissioned eminent Dutch intellectuals and writers to contribute to a one-off English-language issue entitled Misunderstanding the Netherlands, and subtitled ‘Misunderstandings about the Netherlands'. The author feels that hhat has inspired both this issue of ‘De Gids' and the tone of its articles is the ongoing Netherlands crisis of identity so dramatically manifest in the public arena itself.
