René Daniëls introduced an entirely different way of painting. His fiercely painted canvasses at first resembled eruptions of punk-like violence. But Daniëls' great merit lies in the combination of the conceptual or fundamental tradition in painting with expressiveness and an extremely personal lyricism. His work is concerned with the ‘constantly changing meaning of things'. Do I really see what I see? Nothing is fixed.
