The Waste Land is just about the most commented-on poem of the twentieth century. Yet the English reader's guides were often no help to Paul Claes when he was making notes for his Dutch translation (Het barre land, Amsterdam: De Bezige Bij, 2007). Many passages remained mysterious: who is the ‘hyacinth girl' ? who is Madam Sosostris? what is the role of Tiresias? He tried to solve these and other riddles for himself, and in so doing he discovered the biographical key to the poem.
