Video Poem: Lost by Bart Moeyaert

Ons Erfdeel vzw and Poëziecentrum vzw asked nine youngsters from the Low Countries to create poetic films based on their favourite Dutch-language poem. Reinier Kroese (b. 1992, Nijmegen) made a film after the poem Kwijt (Lost) by Bart Moeyaert, from the anthology Verzamel de liefde, published by Querido in 2003. The video poetry project Moving Verses is made possible with the support of the Dutch Foundation for Literature.

Lost

You mustn’t get so lost
you’re dead.
How do I clear up,
if I can’t even call, ask
if you still want our photo?
Then it will be forever silent
in the house and you won’t
even be away, but dead.
No, if I lose you,
I hope I’ll pat my pockets,
look for a while
and then suddenly realise
that you’ve long since
been found
by someone you love more.
Then I will be at rest.
Not otherwise.

Kwijt

Zo kwijt als dood
mag je niet gaan.
Hoe ruim ik op
als ik niet eens
kan bellen, vragen
of je onze foto nog wel wil?
Dan blijft het eeuwig stil
in huis en ben je
niet eens weg, maar dood.
Nee, als ik je verlies,
dan hoop ik dat ik
op mijn zakken sla,
een poosje zoek
en dan ineens bedenk
dat jij allang gevonden bent
door wie je liever ziet.
Dan zal ik kunnen rusten.
Anders niet.
