The humanist promise of Expo'58 remained a dream. The rivalry between the Superpowers did not lead to war, but neither did it bring rapprochement. One of them collapsed and the Cold War gave way to new conflicts. The great fellowship failed to materialise, though idealism did not die out. The prophecy of consumerism, the media, accelerating technological development, the leisure culture and modernism did indeed come true. But the optimism that went with it was exaggerated.
