A.F.Th. van der Heijden is an ambitious writer. He is working on two monumental cycles simultaneously. Nevertheless his body of work exhibits remarkable coherence. Drawing on autobiographical sources there is also an aestheticizing drive. However humble reality turns out to be, literature lays a layer of gold on top. Writing is gilding. With two extracts.
